Supporting arts and artists

This has shaped up to be a sad weekend for the field of entertainment. Two days in a row we have found ourselves shocked and saddened by the death of a popular entertainer.

On Saturday we were all stunned by the passing of actor and comedian Bernie Mac. Bernie Mac', gritty but often all too true stand up routines had us all in stitches. As an actor he had roles in numerous films including Friday, Bad Santa, Ocean's Eleven and Transformers, but he truly shined in his weekly series the Bernie Mac Show. The backbone of the show was strong parenting with all the frustrations and triumphs that go with it. How can we forget Bernie sitting in his den letting us know what the problem was this week and venting his frustrations in those "You know America..." monologues.

And the today while still mourning the lose of Bernie Mac, the entertainment field suffered another huge loss with the death of Black Moses himself, Isaac Hayes. When ever the phrase Blaxplotation came up in connection Hollywood films, Shaft would immediately come to mind. I don't know of anyone around my age who does not immediately recognize the the theme after a few bars. Issac went on to mock his own success in the Keenan Ivory Wayans parody of Blaxplotation films, I'm Gonna Git You Sucka. Younger folks would recognize him as the voice of South Park's Chef.

After this weekend there's a little less laughter and a little less music in the world, Bernie, Isaac, you will be missed. Rest in Peace.
